Top Ten Book Blogs I'm Thankful For

Today is a thankful freebie, and one of the reasons I love blogging is because of the community. Here is a shout out to my friends.

Suey is one of my besties IRL. She and I met when the first Hunger Games movie came out, and a bunch of book people got together to go. I'm so grateful for her friendship and our shared love for books and other things.

Jenni is also a bestie IRL. She and I met on the same Hunger Games night. We clicked right away, and our friendship is deep. I'm so grateful for Jenni's love and friendship. We are kindred spirits.

Jenny is also an IRL friend. She is on hiatus because she is focusing on her small boys. I don't remember when we met, but she is part of the same friend group as Suey and Jenni. I'm grateful for Jenny's friendship and snarky humor. We just get each other.

I don't remember how I found Lark's blog, but I've been following it for a long time. I'm grateful for her simple yet heartfelt posts. The art, haikus, and quotes never fail to bring a smile to my face. She also keeps following me even though I've taken a few blogging breaks. Thank you!

Wendy at The Bashful Bookworm always has the loveliest reviews and books to talk about. It has been fun getting to know her over the past couple years. I'm grateful for her book recommendations and kind comments.

Angela from Eastern Sunset Reads is on a break also. I hope she returns to blogging. I'm so grateful for Angela's friendship. She and I were pen pals for a while, and it was so fun getting to know her and learning about the snail mail community.

Cindy from Cindy's Book Corner and I don't read a lot of the same books, but I really appreciate her devotion to Christian literature, and I enjoy reading her reviews on books I probably won't read. She has opened my eyes to maybe trying a genre I don't normally read. I'm also grateful for her kind comments.

Greg from Book Haven is someone I kept seeing around the blogosphere but I didn't really interact with him. When I finally checked out his blog, I was pleasantly surprised that he is a fellow geek, and I really like that a lot of his posts are great discussions. I appreciate his love for vintage covers, sci fi, and music.

Susan from Bloggin' bout Books is a lovely lady with fun posts and great book reviews. I'm grateful that she isn't afraid to share things about our religion, and I'm grateful that her blog is always so fun to visit.

Blogging with Dragons is one I've recently discovered. I'm grateful that I found this blog because the owner and I seem to have similar reading tastes, and she is a fellow knitter and geek! I look forward to growing our blogging friendship.

The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein

My Thoughts:

-    4.5 stars

-    As a child, Elizabeth was abused and neglected. A lady offers to free her from her situation if she can be a good companion for her son. Victor is an odd boy who can become dangerous if his temper isn't kept in check. Elizabeth decides that she can become whatever Victor needs to calm his moods. Over the years, Elizabeth settles into her role as Victor's "cousin" and constant companion, until he goes to school and no one hears from him for a while. Elizabeth is scared the Frankensteins will kick her out if she doesn't prove her usefulness, so she travels to London in search of Victor. 

-    I read this back in October as one of my spooky reads, and I can't stop thinking about it. To me, it was almost a perfect book. 

-    Kiersten's retelling is hauntingly tragic and really captures the mood of the original story. Knowing what is happening behind the scenes does not detract from the story, in fact, it makes Elizabeth's story even more compelling. 

-    I loved the theme of not letting people around us define our value. I loved the author's note at the end, and why she wrote this book. It was a wonderful tribute to Mary Shelley. 

-    I have mixed feelings about a couple things at the end of the story, but overall I loved it.

Top Ten Favorite "Awww" Moments in Books I Want to Finish in November

I feel like this week's prompt will give away spoilers, so I'm going rogue. 

I know that is a lot read before the end of November, and I probably won't get to all of these, but I like to give myself options.

Thanksgiving Book Tag

Are book tags still a thing? I wanted to do one, so with Google's help I found a Thanksgiving themed book tag from Blogging with Dragons. Their blog looks awesome, so I also started following them.

1. Friends and Family: A book with characters that feel like family

The Prydain series has a whole cast of characters that I love, and because I have loved this series since I was a kid, they are like family to me.

2. Fallen Leaves: A book that fell flat (didn't meet expectations)

This book had a lot of buzz, so I suggested it for book club, and I was so disappointed. I think we'll have a good discussion though.

3. Thanksgiving Dinner: A book you want to read every year during this season

I have no idea why, but I always want to read The Book Thief during fall. 

4. Turkey: A book with a bird in it.

I can't remember if there is an actual mockingbird in the book, or if it is just symbolic. Oh well! It is a great book!

5. Ham: A book that made your eyes glaze over (boring)

I will never understand how this book beat Charlotte's Web for the Newbery Award. It was SOOOO slow and boring.

6. Dinner Rolls: A book that melted your heart and made you feel warm

This book not only melts my heart, but it will always have my heart.

7. Mashed Potatoes: A book with a white cover

This was the first white book that I saw when I glanced at my bookshelves. Great series!

8. Gravy: A book you're not sure why you love, but you do

This was hard because I can usually come up with reasons why I love a book, so I chose a book that is hard for me to articulate why I love it. After I finished Smoky, I cried for about half an hour, and I cannot put into words why I was so moved. My family still wonders about this. 

p.s. They were happy tears.

9. Pumpkin Pie: A dessert book that you love

I'm not big on romance books, but I ADORE this book! I also want the cake!
