The X-Men: Volume 5

15984315From Goodreads:    Get ready for a crash course in X-MEN, students! Lesson #1: It ain't easy being a mutant. No sooner has their mentor, Professor X, died than Magneto and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants show up! Only a study in teamwork with the Avengers can help our grieving heroes make the grade. Lesson #2: Think twice before inviting family over. A friendly house call from the Juggernaut or Polaris, daughter of Magneto, isn't an appealing off-campus adventure! Lesson #3: Battling enemies including Mesmero, Blastaar, Red Raven, Warlock and Computo may cause cramps. Be sure to stretch before jumping into this pool! And for extra credit, pull an all-nighter with the origins of Iceman and Beast, and a rare Angel solo story! COLLECTING: X-Men 43-53, Avengers 53, Ka-Zar (1970) 2-3, Marvel Tales 30

My Thoughts:

-    This one doesn't have the best stories, but I still enjoyed it.

-    I want more Juggernaut.

-    Angel's costume is awful!! The colors and the suspenders just kill me!

-    I the love the illustrations and the scenes. The artists are awesome.

-    Magneto looks crazed in a lot of the panels. He needs to tone down the angst.

-    The intro in the the front has spoilers!! Dang it Roy!

-    There is no way these characters are teenagers. They have jobs, they are ripped, and no teen's body is structured like that.

-    The origin stories of Iceman and Beast were really fun to read. I like learning about the character's history and facts.

-    At the end of the book, there are a series of Angel comics. He goes on a solo adventure. I liked it, but I thought Angel was way too intense.

This series is pretty hot right now. I'm super excited to read Cress!

My favorite is the sketch of the two Cinders. One is in work clothes and the other is in an evening gown. I really like the style of that artist. I also like the close up portrait of Cinder.

Which is your favorite?

Big Bad Ironclad!

13591162Goodreads Description:    Each of the books in Nathan Hale’s Hazardous Tales has elements of the strange but true and is presented in an engaging, funny format, highlighting the larger-than-life characters that pop up in real history.Big Bad Ironclad! covers the history of the amazing ironclad steam warships used in the Civil War.
From the ship’s inventor, who had a history of blowing things up and only 100 days to complete his project, to the mischievous William Cushing, who pranked his way through the whole war, this book is filled with surprisingly true facts and funny, brave characters that modern readers will easily relate to.

My Thoughts:

-    This was another hilarious and educational tale! I loved it!

-    I really like that Nathan Hale (the spy) is still telling stories to the hangman and the redcoat. It's like Scheherezade telling stories to the king to stay alive.

-    I didn't know there were naval battles in the Civil War! That is really cool.

-    William Cushing was the best part of this book. He was hilarious and awesome! I love that he was a forerunner for the Navy Seals. I want to go research this guy some more.

-    The Lego instructions are at the end are gut busting funny.

-    I like the color and lack of color. The last book used red, and this one uses blue.

-    The author took some liberties with the characters, but I thought he did a good job keeping the history straight. My favorite "liberty" was the fox.

-    Hale's illustrations are simple, but he does a good job of getting a lot out of each frame.

Fiddler on the Roof

My Thoughts:

-    This is such a classic!

-    The music is the most memorable thing in this movie. I love all the songs.

-    Topol's portrayal of Tevye is brilliant! He makes this movie!

-    The movie is really long, and sometimes it is hard for me to watch the whole thing in one sitting. The first half is more entertaining than the second half.

-    I feel so bad for Tevye. Each daughter goes a little farther from tradition than the other, and it really tests Tevye and his beliefs. I like the way he can bend and adapt for his daughters' happiness.

-    The fiddler is a bit creepy, but I like how he pops up here and there symbolizing tradition.

-    I love the way Tevye speaks with God. It is like they are old friends.

-    The ending is a sad and somber one. The first time I watched this, I wasn't expecting the movie to take a bad turn of events like that.

-    A lot of the lines from Tevye and Golde are awesome! They are so witty and funny. It cracks me up.

-    Incredible music and dancing, awesome characters, and a great story! If you haven't watched this, you are missing out.

The Iron Queen

8685612Goodreads Synopsis:    My name is Meghan Chase.

I thought it was over. That my time with the fey, the impossible choices I had to make, the sacrifices of those I loved, was behind me. But a storm is approaching, an army of Iron fey that will drag me back, kicking and screaming. Drag me away from the banished prince who's sworn to stand by my side. Drag me into the core of conflict so powerful, I'm not sure anyone can survive it.

This time, there will be no turning back.

My Thoughts:

-    THIS WAS AWESOME! The ending is SO epic! This is definitely my favorite in the series.

-    I had a total girly gushing moment when Ash became Meghan's knight.

-    I really love that Meghan learned how to fight. Her whole character development has been awesome. She is so strong and confident now. She doesn't need to rely on Ash or Puck, and I think she grew more in this book than she did in the previous two.

-    Ash was getting a bit too possessive and protective, and it was making me gag and roll my eyes, but the issue was addressed, which surprised me. I'm really impressed that Ash and Meghan hashed that out. They respect and love each other. Their relationship rocks!

-    I think it is really unfair to keep bringing Ariella up. Okay, we get that it was a hard thing for Ash, now move on! Bringing up old girlfriends is never a good idea in a new relationship.

-    I had no idea how the battle between the Fey and the Iron kingdom would be solved. I was surprised at the end, and I love being surprised.

-    My heart aches for Ash! Dang it Meghan!!

-    I liked learning more about the Iron Kingdom, and I have a new found respect for it. Obviously it wasn't going to go away, but it isn't evil either. The gremlins were fun.

-    The false king's castle is totally Howl's castle.

-    Puck kinda bugged me in this book. His jokes go a little too far, and he was a major third wheel.

-    The battles were a thrill. It reminded me of some of the Lord of the Ring battles. I loved the chaos, and I think the author did a nice job of writing the action scenes.

-    Oh the ending! I could feel my heart thumping in my chest, and I had to remind myself to breathe. AH! I'm dying! I need the next book NOW!
