Books to Read If You Love/Loved X

This is an interesting prompt. My first gut reaction was fantasy or dragons. I also thought about fairytale retellings, but I decided to showcase my favorite fandom! Here are my top ten recommendations if you love STAR WARS!

If you can't tell, I devour everything Star Wars: movies, books, comics, TV series, etc. I cannot get enough! It is my second religion. I wish the books would get as much love as the movies because they are amazing! I love the canon and legend books. Good stuff!

thoughts on each one.

100 Days My Prince - 백일의 낭군님

My Thoughts:

-    Despite being Korean, I have been resistant to watching K-dramas. The ones I've been exposed to in the past were silly and over the top. My friend, Suey, is WAY into them, and she reviewed 100 Days My Prince on her blog. It looked interesting, so I gave it a shot.

-    I was completely and utterly hooked from the beginning! This show is SO good! I loved every moment!

-    The crown prince is a very unhappy fellow, for reasons I can't tell you because of spoilers. He isn't having bedroom relations with is wife, and everyone is blaming him for the drought. He decides to make all the bachelors and spinsters get married so they can balance the yin and yang with baby making instead of him. Well, the crown princess is pregnant (gasp), and it ruining her father's evil plans, so they decide to kill the crown prince. During the incident, he does not die. Instead, he is wounded and gets amnesia. This is where the real fun begins. Hong-Sim does not want to get married, so to avoid getting beat to death, she "marries" this guy with amnesia that her dad found. The prince has no idea who he is, but he still has all his princely mannerisms and tastes. It is hilarious, trust me. All the while, there is all this back story and intrigue. The characters are all connected in intricate ways. It is AMAZING!

-    I cannot gush about this show enough. It is my new favorite thing. I went through so many emotions while watching: I had so much nostalgia, I laughed out loud, I cried, I was on the edge of my seat. This show has everything.

-    ALL THE KOREAN STUFF!!!

-    My mom binged this in a few days, and she is watching another K-drama that is supposedly really good, and she wants me to watch it too. I might be hooked on K-dramas. We'll see. Suey is beyond excited.

-    p.s. I may have developed a little crush on one of the actors. His smile is so darn adorable! (sigh)

Let's Get Invisible!

Title:  Let's Get Invisible!

Author:  R. L. Stine

Series:  Goosebumps #6

Date Published:  March 1993

Genre:  Middle Grade, Fiction, Horror (not really)

Rating:  ★☆☆☆☆

My Thoughts:

-    Gnome used to be terrified of all things Halloween. She wouldn't go trick-or-treating because she didn't want to see the "scary" decorations or the "scary" costumes. Hubby and I slowly introduced her to things that might be "scary", and I started the tradition of reading a Goosebumps book with her every October. It has been about four years now, and she loves Halloween. She used to hate the Goosebumps books, but now she doesn't mind them. She has come a long way, and I'm so proud of her.

-    When I was a kid, I thought the Goosebumps books were so cool, but as an adult, I don't understand why they were so popular back in the day.

-    Let's Get Invisible is about a boy and his little brother who find a full length mirror in their attic. The mirror has a light attached to it, which is weird. When they stand in front of the mirror and pull the chain to the light, they disappear. When the they turn the light off, they reappear. It sounds cool at first, but it isn't.

-    Most of the book is this boy and his friends having a competition about who can stay invisible the longest. It is dumb. Nothing happens until about the last ten pages of the book. Seriously! The cool thing doesn't happen until the very end, and then the kid solves it, and the book ends. LAME!

-    Gnome and I were both SO bored, and we both felt like the book was really dumb. I guess when you are pumping out a book a month, they all can't be winners.

-    If you are reading this series with your kid, skip this one. Trust me, you won't miss anything.

Goal Progress:

Goodreads Challenge - I am 4 books behind schedule. Hopefully I can catch up in November. (96/120)

Newbery Books -  Yes, I am still trying to read all the Newbery winners. I am reading them in order, and I'm in the 1950s. It has been fun to experience the progression in the reading world. (30/99)

Books I Would Hand to Someone Who Claims to
Not Like Reading

When someone tells me they don't like reading, my first response is always, "You're doing it wrong." I love recommending books to people. This prompt is hard because I usually try to figure out what kinds of stories, movies, topics, etc. that person is interested in. My list of books are ones that I recommend to a lot of people who aren't big readers.

It was hard to stop at ten! Ha!

NaNoWriMo

I have joined NaNoWriMo this year! I'm really excited. It is something I've always wanted to do, but I've never had the guts to do it. Well, no more excuses! This is my time!

My friend, Suey, is doing NaNo with me. I'm super grateful that I'm not doing this alone. We are going to cheer each other on! Woo!

If you'd like to be my buddy, here is my profile. Good luck to everyone participating!

Dune

My Thoughts:

-    I wasn't planning on seeing Dune. I just wasn't interested, but my friends wanted to go, and they invited me along, so I went.

-    This was my very first IMAX movie. It was impressive. The screen was massive, and the sound quality was amazing. I went to another another movie that evening (yes, two movies in one day), and the screen and sound were not as good. It seemed so small, and I wanted the larger screen. Suey, you spoiled me!

-    The movie only covers the first part of the book. There will be more movies.

-    Basically, the house of bald and brooding bad guys ruled the spice planet for a long time and became ridiculously rich. The emperor decided to remove the bad guy house from the spice planet and replace them with the good guy house led by a bearded Poe Dameron. Poe's mistress, Jessica, is part of this scary witch group. She has been training her son, Paul, in her witchy/culty ways. Paul is special because of his bloodline and training. Well, he is having vivid dreams about Zendaya and other things on the spice planet. When Poe's people get to the spice planet, they find out the bad guys have left it in bad shape, and bad things happen. There is a lot of political and cultural things going on that are important to the story, but it is a big jumbled mess.

-    The blue-eyed desert people are really important, but the movie mostly just talks about them. The desert people live on the spice planet, and the big bald bad guys were mean to them, but the new good guys want to work with them in harmony. Zendaya is part of the desert people, but she only gets to be seen for a small part at the end of the movie, and in Paul's dreams.

-    The ending is a little abrupt, because there are going to be more movies, so the story does not get wrapped up, things are just bad for our heroes.

-    I didn't like that Jessica kept freaking out during the movie. She is a member of this scary witch group, so she should be able to be more in control of herself.

-    The movie is LONG, and it feels long. I don't mind long movies, but I mind when they feel long, and I'm wondering when the heck they are going to wrap this up.

-    Overall, I enjoyed the movie. I thought it was a good adaptation of the book. I felt the same way about the movie that I did the book, so that is good. The movie is a beautiful feast for the eyes. The cinematography was well done. The music is gorgeous. Hans Zimmer really outdoes himself on this one. Yes, I would recommend seeing it in the theater, in IMAX.

My friends and I hosted a read along for Dune a while ago.
I will post links below, so you can check out my previous posts on the book.

Anyone There?

My friends! It has been a long time! I want to get back into blogging and the book community. Even though I took a break from blogging, I have still been reading, and I would like to share my thoughts. Just out of curiosity I have some questions.

Does anyone still follow my blog? If so, please make yourself known. It will lift my spirits.

I kinda want to rebrand myself and switch up my blogging style. Has anyone else done this? Do you have tips? Is it hard to do?

Anyhoo, I'm still in the planning phase of coming back, but I wanted to send my questions out into the void and say hi.
